Hi, I’m Christine. Are you a self-proclaimed night owl like me? For years, sleep took a backseat in my life as a perfectionist single mom with an overflowing to-do list. At night, my unfinished tasks would haunt my dreams, and I couldn’t quiet the anxious thoughts that raced through my mind. It felt impossible to switch off and drift into a restful slumber.
The next morning was a whirlwind of hitting the snooze button until it begged for mercy, rushing out of bed with stress as my companion throughout the day. I always felt one step behind, trying to catch up. To cope, I relied on caffeine and food, hoping to find temporary energy. But by day’s end, exhaustion consumed me. Still, I pushed myself, often staying up late, browsing the internet as a means of unwinding, despite knowing it only worsened my sleep deprivation. I was caught in a cycle of being “tired but wired.”
This detrimental pattern had far-reaching consequences on my Type 1 diabetes, anxiety, and depression. My focus at work suffered, and I couldn’t be as mentally present for my children as I desired. Later on, life threw more challenges my way—adjusting to married life, becoming an empty-nester, and experiencing the hormonal changes of menopause.
As a health coach, I started learning about the vital role of sleep. I realized that sleep deprivation not only feels awful but also takes a toll on both physical and mental well-being.
Driven by a desire for change, I shifted my focus to living a healthier lifestyle during the day, with the goal of achieving better sleep at night. I cultivated mindfulness skills, nourished my spiritual growth, and learned to be kinder to myself. I discovered that I didn’t always have to be constantly “doing” something and that making time for self-care was not only acceptable but essential. By transforming my mindset and harnessing stress rather than trying to eliminate it, I regained balance in my hormones.
And the results were astonishing. I started experiencing improved sleep, better control over my blood sugar levels, weight loss, and a more stable mood. Paradoxically, as I learned to slow down, I became more productive. I learned to prioritize what truly mattered: my well-being.
